Delivering innovation at scale:
Interactive live chat with The Salvation Army

Watch our live chat with Steven and Sharon Bussey, Territorial Mission Strategists at TSA's USA Eastern Territory. We deep diving into why innovation is so important to them and their decision to embrace an Innovation & Portfolio Management Office to underpin their innovation process.

The Salvation Army is an international non-profit that aims to meet human needs without discrimination and serves in over 130 countries across the globe. In the United States territories, the organization assists approximately 23 million Americans annually. The Salvation Army has been at the forefront of innovation both within their sector and within the wider corporate space since its foundation in 1865. In 2020, after the Coronavirus pandemic hit, the organization recognized they needed a platform to underpin their existing processes and deliver innovation at scale.

During this live chat, you'll hear how The Salvation Army is connecting its strategy, innovation and portfolio management process and integrates them into the organization as a whole.

We discussed:

  • What challenges they were facing and why they chose edison365 to underpin their innovation process.
  • How this new process connects donors, frontline workers and executives.
  • How ideas get evaluated against the financial KPIs that matter.
  • How edison365 supports the execution of all types of projects in The Salvation Army.

Steven and Sharon Bussey

Territorial Mission Strategists, The Salvation Army, USA Eastern Territory

Steve and Sharon Bussey currently serve as the Territorial Mission Strategists for The Salvation Army's USA Eastern Territory. They work out of the Office of the Chief Secretary (COO) to manage strategy, innovation, consultation, change processes, and enterprise-level projects. They have been happily married for over 24 years and have two adult daughters who are out making a difference in the world.

They met in Johannesburg, South Africa, and teamed up when they were fourteen years old - running a Sunday School for youth living in an impoverished local community. After their marriage in 1996, they began working professionally together for The Salvation Army in Cape Town, South Africa. In 1999, they relocated to New York and worked in various roles for The Salvation Army, including Leadership Specialists and Co-directors of Railton School for Youth Worker Training. In 2012 the Bussey's created and co-directed the first formal innovation department in The Salvation Army's 150+ year history.

Steve has studied theology, innovation strategy, and business management, while Sharon has studied instructional design and project management. They have been involved in reimagining organizational systems, large-scale events, resource development, technological innovations, and interactive learning experiences. Whatever they set themselves to do, they aim to weave a curious and creative spirit of wonder with an outcome-oriented sense of purpose. Together, they seek to integrate their gifts and creativity to help The Salvation Army fulfil its mission.
